A spruce-blue snug with room for everyone
The room began as a child's bedroom and spent the years after as a den with its attention settling on the television. The client asked it to do more, and it became a sitting room for three or four, a library, a place for light laptop work or a game of chess, and a guest room when the house fills. People can share it while doing different things–one watching, one reading, one scrolling–and the room no longer insists on a single reason to be there.
The palette came from outside the window. Colorado Spruce trees stand in view of the room, and their dusty, chalky blue became its ground, carried at full saturation across the walls and onto a high-gloss ceiling that gives the simple square room depth and reflection. Warmth arrived through tan and brown, with rust and amber catching the light against the deep blue.
The corner shown here carries the palette in vignette. The existing sofa stayed, joined by a fringed velvet ottoman, a plaid and a shearling pillow, and a vintage African stool keeping a book within reach. What the room gives back is a comfortable place to be together, with no reason needed.
